Story of place by the girls
The Marolles has always been a vibrant, working-class neighborhood in the heart of Brussels. On the edge of the district, between the Kapelle Church and Saint-Jan Berchmans College, you’ll find our skate park, a space that girls also use and, in doing so, claim their place. We, the girls of Girls Make the City, come from very diverse backgrounds, but we all agree on what makes the Marolles and its skatepark so unique.
Firstly, its central location in the city makes it easily accessible, even on foot. Everything you need is nearby: shops, public transport, and the flea market. Here, we know each other, and everyone keeps an eye on things. The neighborhood is diverse, both socially and ethnically, as well as in terms of gender. And yes, the Marolles is cozy too—it always has been and always will be. We love to celebrate.
The community life here is rich, with many activities where everyone can play their own role. In the skate park, we strive to claim our freedom, free from prejudice.
